Asteroid Agriculture

2023-2024 School Year

About.

Abstract

My goal is to simulate the materials present in asteroids to create soil and eventually use it to grow radishes and lettuce. Due to the inhospitable conditions of space, I will also be adding in varying amounts of topsoil from earth to give nutrients to the plants I will be growing. To maintain stable conditions throughout the year, I will obtain a greenhouse and a means to keep it warm over the duration of my project. I will devote most of the summer to research and preliminary set up, like making sure the greenhouse and heater work properly and researching on a final composition for the artificial soil I will be making. For the remainder of the year, I will be growing several different groups of radishes and lettuce, gathering data on the plant heights at regular intervals and taking a biomass measurement when harvesting them. Due to the differences in growth times between the two plants I will grow roughly five sets of radishes but only three sets of lettuce. By the end of my project, I hope to find the point where plant growth is still possible while using the least amount of Earth topsoil as possible to establish the dichotomy that while conditions in space are not perfect, it is still a possibility to create infrastructure outside of the Earth’s environment.
About Me
My name is Kiernan Robinson, a 17 year old student at Severn school, and a member of the class of 2024. Astronomy and astrophysics have always been some of my favorite topics, so doing this project gives me a way to further explore them, while also using it to bring more focus to this type of research.
